Soay Sheep
We care for a flock of British Soay sheep, a primitive breed that dates back to the Bronze Age. They are tough and hardy and easy to keep. Soay are curious but shy, are petite in stature, and have a soft wool that naturally sheds each spring.
Unlike most domesticated sheep, they are browsers rather than grazers. They will eat your weedy thickets, blackberry patches, daisies, dandelions, and brushy undergrowth.
Soay are great for a small homestead or regenerative farm. They are light on the land and can make do on poor pasture.
Their wool sheds naturally and the fibers are very soft and fine, but short.
The Soay meet is gamey, often compared to venison. It’s delicious. And very different from the taste of domesticated lamb. Soay are ideal for home slaughter, starting at around 18 months of age.
